A Talk With a Pest Expert About Winter Pests

By: Dovid Davis

Hi, I'm Boruch Fishman and welcome to another episode of Close Up. Today, I will be talking with you that I learned recently from Dovid Davis, a Baltimore pest control expert and Director of A #1 Pest Control, a Baltimore pest control company about pests that invade the home in winter.

Most householders, who have been battling witha variety of insect pests during the warm months, can heave a sigh of contentment when the colder winter weather moves into town. As any pest exterminator can tell you, there are not as many calls for insect pest problems in the colder months.

The number of cockroaches thin out.. The occasional hardy winter cockroach is easily gotten rid of. Dueto the warmth found in the kitchen and near electrical appliances and machines such as refrigerators and computers, the roaches tend to come out in the open where they are easytargets. Ants tend tocome into the house when the weather starts to turn cold in the fall. However, by the time winter comes in most ants have died out and the remains of ant hills, which they had tried to construct in the kitchen or another part of the home will resemble ghost towns.

Termites are another insect that likes to breed in the spring and fall and are not frequently seen in the winter. And the same can be said aboutstinging insect pests and most species of invading bugs.
However, according to Dovid Davis there are several types of pests which are frequently found indoors in the winter. These pests include warm blooded pests such as raccoons and squirrels.

When the colder weather comes in, these warm blooded mammals want to migrate in doors where warmer temperatures can be found. A nice warm household is ideal for these types of pests. Rodents, such as mice will ferret outany means of ingress and then seek to nest behind appliances or in holes which they find in the walls near the kitchen. Dwelling places, such as these, provide, a great vantage point from which they can forage at night searching for available food or or unpackaged or even packaged provender kept in the kitchen.
Squirrels and Raccoons, on the other hand, will head for the attic, a crawl space or out of the way corner in the garage or storage hut. To get to these sought after winter get away lodgings the wild animals will either gnarl through the roof or wall or else seek an already existent hole as a means of ingress. These animals will come and go for a while, filling up their borrowed home with nuts and othertypes of nourishment that will help them through the winter. And, if not caught, these animal invaders will set up their nest homes in their winter home, unbeknown to their host.

According to Dovid Davis, the first sign that winter pests are in the home are often sounds coming from inside the wall, (usually for rodents), and sounds coming from attic, (for squirrels and raccoons). Other signs of mice invasion include mice droppings, small circular gnarl holes in food packages, and the general smelly stench that hangs around places where mice live.
If you have a suspicion that a winter pest has invaded your house don't hesitate to call an exterminator.. The pest specialist will know how to determine if there are pests in your house and if so he will happy to help you get rid of them.

Well folks, that's it for another episode of Close Up, I'm Boruch Fishman, have a great day!
