One of the most complex issues when it comes to running a business and dealing with employees is payroll. There are benefits to consider, paid vacation time, promotions, cost of living raises and a whole host of other issues, which have to be considered. One of the most controversial issues for any employer is handling the management of offsite or telecommuting employees. When a physical location is maintained for a business, it is not difficult to keep track of employees who are going in and out. There is a variety of different methods such as key card entries, computer log in times and so forth that can be used to verify the hours an employee works. However, when a company has multiple locations that change frequently or employees that telecommute it can become difficult to monitor all the employees and ensure the reported worked time is accurate. This is where phone and web based time and attendance systems come into effect. These systems generally work together. They have the benefit that they do not require a physical presence to work while still allowing an employer to be able to know where an employee is when he or she clocks in and out. The system is simple. The employer enters the employee information including their location. When the employee calls in a few things are recorded. The first is the location of the employee. If the location does not match what is in the system it sends a notification to the employer. The second thing it records is the time. One of the features of these types of programs is that they allow the employer to enter in a set schedule for each of the employees. When an employee deviates from the schedule on their clock in and out calls, a report is generated and supplied to the employer. This type of system allows employers to keep track of multiple locations, locations that change, or off site locations from which employees may telecommute. It also allows for a more accurate accounting of the time telecommuting and off site employees work. The goal of this type of system is to reduce the amount of overhead for a company in terms of lost wages. One of the biggest losses when it comes to personnel that a company experiences is from wages that are paid out for time that was not worked. This helps to eliminate this problem and also shows employers which of their generally unsupervised employers are towing the line. Technology has made it possible to accomplish a great many things. While in some areas, it has increased the complexity of management, in others it allows for the creation of a management system that helps to reduce a company's overhead by reducing the amount of wages lost but also helps companies consider the option of telecommuting. Telecommuting is becoming increasingly popular due to the numerous benefits and reductions in cost to a company; however, one of the biggest issues was the management of employee time without onsite supervision. This type of phone based time and attendance system helps to eliminate this concern.
