Can You Upholster Your Car Seats Yourself? Why You Should Seek Professional Recommendation

By: Thomas Bridleman

Yes you can but few of us do it as it can be a lot of effort. It's much less difficult to have the specialists at the repair shop do it for you, particularly if you're going for a customized look in the spirit of Chip Foose Cars, or undertaking a classic reinstatement attempt.

In these budget conscious times, you could be tempted to replace those tatty seats yourself. It doesn't expense a lot of money and could be simply what your truck requirements. You may not do as good a job as the professionals but it will possibly still look better than the old ones. Go and pick out a little fabric. The kind you selected will rely upon your personal taste and your sewing skills. Velvet could be a fine selection as it's quite forgiving of the beginner sewer. It's also relaxing to sit on and fairly long-lasting although it has to be said, it does not mix well with wet weather or dogs! Also, this is a poor selection of material if you're trying to do a restoration to factory condition... it's simply not a material that was used. Naturally, if you're doing something fancier, and want a look similar to what you can get on Television (Chip Foose Cars again), this material could be incorporated easily enough.

Whatever material you chose will have to be cut and sewn to size. One way of doing this is to take apart the existing covering and using this as a pattern. It is not perfect as you may transfer stretching and other irregularities to the new covers but it may be the only means you can manage to do it.

If this all seems like excessive work, you can consider just adding new seat covers. Most car models are provided for as it's crucial that you select the correct shape and fit. Otherwise they'll look dreadful. The custom seat covers will take account of the form of the seat, the head rests and the seat controls. They are a very economical way to improve the look of your car although if you are renovating an extremely old model vehicle you may not be able to find a custom fit.

Remember though, a lot of the answer to this question revolves around what your ultimate aims and targets are. If all you are trying to do is replace something ripped or torn... that is fairly easy, or can be. On the other hand, if you're looking to create something that could compete with Chip Foose Cars in the looks department, you'd probably be better served working with a professional.
