Choosing a Graphic Design School

By: Jay Ellsworth

Many people are interested in the area of multimedia arts. This area ranges from video games to computer animation and choosing the correct graphic design school is very important. Attending the wrong school, or attending one that doesn't match your needs just right can be disastrous. With the cost of getting a respectable college education you can almost certainly only afford to do this once or twice.

The idea behind a graphic design school is to teach you all you need to know about the basics for the area. The area is so large that you can go to work in a various number of careers inside of it. The major career paths that branch off from this area are 3D Animation, Video Game Design, Internet Media Development, and finally Web Design. While Web Design may seem like an unusual one to be included, bear in mind that somebody has to make the animated flash movies we see on the internet.

Don't forget that a tech school is to a large extent different from a traditional college. Tech schools can be more expensive than community colleges and may possibly lack the wide assortment of other fields to study. However this is predominantly due to the fact that they concentrate in the area of your degree, and nothing else. This leads to a very big emphasis on your particular career path over all other educational courses.

Another thing to be concerned about when choosing a graphic design school is the amount of money, and financial aid that's going to be offered to you. A number of schools only go with one or two different finance companies. Others will let you choose which finance companies you to use. You also have to look at the quality of the labs, and the type of computers you will be using.

A graphic design school that's using old outdated computers that are only suitable for office work is not where you want to get your degree. It will be virtually impossible to do any complicated animations or graphic art on such computer systems, and you wouldn't be able to learn as well. The best schools to learn from are the ones that have the most modern equipment, and competent teachers. This ensures that you get the top education and most value for your money.

The possible downside to technical and trade schools is that their credits often do not transfer to other schools. Remember this if you're considering about changing schools mid degree. If you complete one year, and then decide to change schools, your may have to start over. Obviously this is mainly dependant on which school you go to and their accreditation.

Some technical and trade schools are nationally recognized and transferring credits isn't isn't difficult. One other thing to be aware of when choosing a graphic design school is to not not be awed by a name. Again pick the one that has the top program of study, teachers, and equipment. This is your instruction and you have to get as much out of it as you can.
