By: Radim Krizan

Once in a while, everyone desires to lie back and rest. Just to sleep and get a rest in sweet repose. Have a massage, take pleasure in one's day. The West Bohemian Spa Triangle is a great location for the rebirth of your soul and body.

The long-subsided volcanic activity on the border of the Slavkov Forest was accompanied by the genesis of mineral springs that have made the locality of West Bohemia recognized all-around the earth. While Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad) , established by the recognized Czech ruler Charles IV, is the most distinguished spa city here, there are several other no less outstanding spa towns in the region that are exceptionally admired with both patients and tourists. Although the advantageous effects of the local springs had evidently become identified in as early as the tenth century, spas did not actually develop until a lot later on, in the nineteenth century. At the same time, Frantiskovy Lazne was designed at the very end of the 18th century, followed by the formation of Marianske Lazne, therefore completing the "Spa Triangle". Local and overseas guests alike have been approaching to get pleasure from the indigenous mineral springs for hundreds of years; the visitors' book of the spa resorts include the names of monarchs such as the English ruler Edward VII, Napoleon III, recognized composers such as Fryderyk Chopin and Richard Wagner, writers such as Johann W. Goethe, Mark Twain and Franz Kafka, or for instance the honored Moravian-born originator of psychoanalysis Sigmund Freud. But there is much more. You can too get pleasure from the rich cultural service, go for cycling, mountain climbing and seeing the sights trips, play tennis & golf, ride a horse, explore water sports activities in summer time & cross-country skiing during winter.

Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad / Karlsbad)

Karlovy Vary is the best notorious spa town situated in West Bohemia. It was founded approximately 1350 by the Holy Roman Emperor and King of Bohemia, Charles IV. Its magnificent roads as well as colonnades are surrounded by calm forested hills crisscrossed with mountain climbing & cycling paths that are ideal for pleasurable walks all time round.
A busy cultural events calendar, numerous festivals as well as international conferences make Karlovy Vary the largest & liveliest spa city in the Czech Republic visited not only by the spa-guests but also celebrities. Carlsbad achieved its fame also thanks to its well-known natural liqueur known as Becherovka (nicknamed "The 13th Spring"), Mattoni mineral water, unique spa wafers, and Moser crystal glass.
The curative waters from the springs in the valley of the Tepla River have been used by public from time immemorial - both for drinking as well as bathing.

Marianske Lazne (Marienbad)

The town of Marienbad (Marianske Lazne) locates in a good-looking wide valley in West Bohemia, 628 meters above sea level. An roughly twenty km wide strip of forest with numerous hiking trails passes right throughout the spa town.
Marienbad (Marianske Lazne) enjoys an exceptional popularity around the world both for its treatment methods and efficient natural therapeutic resources, as well as for its charming, enchanting surroundings. Almost one hundred old springs have been discovered in and around the city, all with high concentration of CO2. Some had been revealed as early as in the 16th century.
A authentic jewel among the local neoclassical buildings is the spa town colonnade built in 1889. The spa district is dominated by the so-called 'Singing Fountain' entertaining the passers-by with melody and illumination performances.
Marienbad launched its first spa season in 1808, but rapidly grew to become a trendy resort among Europe's elite. Amongst its customers were English Ruler Edward VII., Polish composer and pianist Fryderyk Chopin and German poet Goethe.
The regional spas focus in treating musculoskeletal disorders, and diseases of the urinary tract, kidney and gynecological problems. The programs are based on natural sources - cold ferrite acidulous water, natural gas, CO2 and mud.

Frantiskovy Lazne (Franzienbad)

Frantiskovy Lazne, founded in 1793, is a worldwide famous spa town located in the western part of the Czech Republic. Thankfulness to its neoclassical spa buildings & pavilions the township preserved the exceptional atmosphere of the early twentieth century and is regarded as one of the most charming spa town in the country.
The region offers moderate climate, clean air and no noise town life. Many parks all-around the city with its promenades & musicians are a perfect location for stress-free walks. All these conditions add to the curative effects of the local mineral springs that every year attract many spa-guests.
