Do you need a licence to operate an acupuncture business?

By: Maksiv Konta

If you are in any doubt about whether you should register to comply with licensing laws, contact a licensing solicitor as soon as possible. Licensing solicitors can assess your business and offer their advice about whether registration is needed. If you do need to register your business, your licensing solicitor can assist with the application.

Your local authority will usually have a form on their website where you can make your initial contact for registration. In most cases, your local authority will register you and also your premises, which will be inspected as part of the registration process. This is to ensure you maintain high levels of hygiene when carrying out each procedure.

Note that if you are a qualified medical practitioner or work under one, you won’t normally need to register your business. In addition, if your business is based in Scotland, Civic Government (Scotland) Act (Licensing of Skin Piercing and Tattooing) Order compels you to obtain a licence for your business. Licensing solicitors in Scotland can help you make this application for your licence. It is important to have this licence in place before you begin trading, as failure to do so would break licensing laws and could result in a fine.

Other licences that your business may need will depend on its activities. The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations could apply to your business if it handles any hazardous substances. And if you intend to play music while you treat your patients, a licence would be needed as your business would be broadcasting this music to the public. A licensing solicitor can outline how these licences can be applied for, and how they are enforced.
