Do you need a licence to run a butcher's business?

By: Maksiv Konta

It is a requirement to register your business with your local authority because of the food hygiene regulations that are in force. The main piece of legislation to be aware of is the Food Safety Act and any specific regulations that could apply to your business, if for instance you sell Halal meat. A licence isn’t required to sell this meat, but certification is available. Your licensing solicitor can outline how this works and what advantages your business could gain by obtaining this certificate.

Since 2007 butchers have no longer needed a licence to sell game in England and Wales. However, you do have a responsibility to ensure that the meat or bird you sell in your shop was legally obtained. If your butchers shop is in Northern Ireland or Scotland, you still need a licence to sell game. Contact a licensing solicitor in your area, as they will have experience of the licensing system as it relates to game, and can help with your application.

Often overlooked, other licences that you could need for your butchers shop may include a performance licence if you intend to play music in your premises. As music is copyrighted, you must obtain a licence, as you are in effect broadcasting the music to the public. A licensing solicitor can help you obtain the licences you need to ensure your business is complying with this area of licensing law.
