Fashionable Walking Canes

By: Sian Hughes

We can find evidence of walking canes going back to the beginning of history itself. Religious prophets such as Moses with his staff, Egyptian Pharaohs had their rods, with Tutankhamun being the earliest recorded collector or canes and distinguised men through the years have had their portraits painted standing proud with their elegant walking canes.

Walking canes for these gentlemen were a sign of prosperity and influence and the more flamboyant the cane the more important the personage. Canes weren't just reserved for the rich and powerful though, from the simplest peasant with his hand carved wooden cane to the rich duke with his ivory handled cane they could be observed in all walks of life.

Walking canes often reflected the personality of the owner. One man interested in hunting may have had animal heads as the handle or a sailor may have had a handle made from whalebone and a traveller a handle made from Jade. They also filled a variety of purposes, some had a sword hidden inside or could double up as an umbrella. Some even had a flask cunningly hidden so the owner could have a secret tipple!

Canes were most certainly seen as a smart gentleman's accessory and some of the older generations still talk today whimsically of times past when men would step out with a smart walking cane.

In recent times however, walking canes have become more of a mobility aid and less of a fashion accessory and it's fairly unusual to see a walking cane that truly stands out from the masses of brown, grey and black sturdy utilitarian canes used today. But why should a change of usage go hand in hand with a change of style? Does this say something about society's attitudes towards the disabled? Does it mean we don't want the mobility impaired to stand out and look stylish?

These are questions Debbie Deboo a disabled woman posed to herself when she found she needed to use a walking cane and then crutches. Why were they all grey and boring? What happened to the stylish walking canes of times past? Not finding any answers Debbie founded GlamSticks a company dedicated to bringing stylish walking canes and crutches back into fashion. What you will find at GlamSticks is a dazzling array of fun and funky fashionable walking canes and sticks and crutches but not only that, she will also design them to your own specification if you have something in mind for a wedding for example.
