Have You Considered A Summer Vacation Road Trip?

By: Eileen Cantor

When you head out on your road trip you'll want to make sure the summer driving season brings maximum enjoyment and minimum stress. Wait a second to look at the travel tips below.

Use all season or summer tires and put away the ones for winter. Around a pound of tire pressure is lost each month from a standard tire so check the tires prior to leaving. The key to prevent blowouts and tread separation is correct tire inflation because contact between tire and road is optimized.

Check the car fluids too. Change the car oil if it has not been already. The owner manual for your vehicle includes oil suggestions from the car maker. Go see inside the radiator while the car hood is up and check your antifreeze coolant mixture. The ideal coolant to water ratio is 50 to 50 to ensure maximum temperature regulation in hot and cold climes.

Look through the entire car one more time. Mechanics will determine whether the car hoses and belts are fine. Make sure your wiper blades are still in tiptop shape and not over the average lifespan of one year. Check your car battery and if it is under three years old you are in the clear.

Always have emergency kits handy in your cars. Store important emergency gear like flashlights and jumper cables or flares in the cargo area and have a mat handy so clothes do not get dirty in case of a tire change. Also pack extra clothes and gloves, paper towels, extra washer fluid, non perishable food and jug of water and basic tools like wrenches, hatchet, socket set, screwdrivers and pliers.

Many of us are guilty of taking everything with us on road trips such as stuffing our vehicles to the roof with pillows, coolers, suitcases, and CDs. There is no need to bring a whole lot so just pack the basics. The hotel will take care of your shampoo needs so no need to bring extra. You are going to a hotel not the woods so there will be washers and dryers there for doing laundry which means bringing 10 pairs of shorts is not required.

When done picking out what you will bring pack them just so that they do not interfere with your view of the road. If using a pickup truck for heavy items put the ones with the most weight in the center so unloading is less complicated as for the rest of the items be sure to even them out in the car.

Drowsy driving contributes considerably to current road mishap statistics. The hours long drive will prove less tiring if you got to sleep fitfully before the actual day of the drive. While coffee perks you right up the caffeine buzz is just temporary and you soon find yourself in a lulled state. Pull over regularly and switch drivers when possible every hour. Tiny bladders mean more frequent urinations and hence more stops to go to the bathroom which in turn leads to less incidence of thoroughfare fatigue.

Just think you are exhausted and still driving after hours of even more driving and the kids are not exactly at their best behavior in the back of the car so you finally lose it and road rage takes place. Being mean will not get you far. Tailgating is wrong and the same goes for hogging the road so never do them but always use car signals. All it takes to make roadways a friendlier place is people agreeing and not bickering. These travel tips will undoubtedly help when it comes time to pull out the driveway for the ultimate summer road trip.
