History Of The ESP Guitar

By: Steve Miller

Electric Sound Products, known as ESP, established in Tokyo Japan in 1975 as a corporation that provided custom replacement parts for guitars. However, the first ESP guitar wasn't built until 1976. ESP Guitars and replacement components remained to be offered solely in Japan for nearly ten years prior to moving into the U.S. marketplace. In 1983 their replacement accessories were made accessible in the United States. At last, in 1984 their electric guitars made their American arrival.

In 1984 - 1985 ESP Guitars have been attracting some notice from magnificent musicians such as Bruce Kulick (Kiss), Ronnie Wood (The Rolling Stones) and Vernon Reid (Living Colour).

The next important name to discover ESP Guitars was George Lynch of Dokken, while searching for guitar accessories as he was on tour in Japan. When George found out that ESP crafted custom guitars, the prototype "Kamikaze" was crafted for him. The Kamikaze was the pioneer signature model to be crafted.

Soon after, more players started to take notice of ESP and began jamming on their guitars in the late 1980's. Kirk Hammett and James Hetfield of Metallica were 2 of the bigger names.

In fact, speakin of James Hetfield, an ESP guitar that he played during Metallica first started to develop into widespread, got the ESP Corporation into some legal problems. The guitar he used, known as the EXP, was a duplicate of the Gibson Explorer. Though guitar companies were selling replicas of their guitars for many years, Gibson decided to sue ESP Guitars. The standard of the EXP guitar was so great that players were buying them like crazy and this was allegedly cutting into the revenue of Gibson's guitars. Finally, ESP lost the court case and changed their design to the currently well-known 'EX' design.

In mid 2002, ESP gross sales started to grow at a swift pace making them one of the quickest growing organizations at that time. This upsurge in gross sales was directly related to Fender buying out Jackson Guitars. Jackson was the company that ESP had competed with in the 1980's and 90's the buyout of Jackson Guitars, lots of the high profile axemen hopped ship and went over to ESP. Guitar players like Dave Mustaine of Megadeth, found it an easy transition to change over to ESP Guitars due to the high quality and comparable thrash-metal aggresive designs.

ESP guitars are still highly regarded today. During the 08 Winter NAMM show, ESP introduced over 50 all-new guitar and bass models. In addition they have an incredible number of big profile guitar players on their roster including Kirk Hammett and James Hetfield of Metallica, Wayne Static of Static-X, Alexi Laiho Children of Bodom, Will Adler of Lamb of God, Ron Wood, George Lynch, and the latest member, Richie Sambora of Bon Jovi. With the nice quality that ESP produce, its a no brainer to know they are going to be around for many more years to come.
