Is there a personal injury accreditation scheme?

By: Maksiv Konta

The personal injury solicitors accreditation scheme was set up to provide the public with a list of accredited members who have demonstrated to the Law Society their ability to provide high quality legal advice and services specifically in the personal injury field.

In order to join, members must demonstrate significant experience in the field, as well as a range of skills and expertise specific to personal injury claims. Membership of the scheme infers a high level of skill and is aimed at providing peace of mind to someone looking to make a claim, as well as providing consumers with a benchmark so that they can make an informed choice of legal representative.

If you are considering making a personal injury claim you should seek legal advice from a personal injury solicitor that is a member of the Law Society’s personal injury accreditation scheme. Your personal injury solicitor will be able to assess the facts of your case first before offering you their opinion as to whether they believe your claim likely to succeed. There are some solicitors who charge for this initial consultation, although it is possible to find many solicitors who offer this service for free.

In many cases, personal injury solicitors are able to work on a no-win, no-fee basis, also known as a Conditional Fee Arrangement. This allows you to receive advice and legal services from your personal injury solicitor, safe in the knowledge that your costs are covered by insurance in the event that your claim is unsuccessful. If you are successful, then usually your solicitor’s costs are covered by the defendant, meaning that you should be able to walk away with the full amount of any compensation awarded.

It is worth clarifying the exact fee arrangement with your personal injury solicitor before proceeding with a claim. It is also worth asking whether you will be expected to cover the costs of any one-off disbursements incurred during the claim process.
