Making Choices: Surgery or Therapy?

By: Roman Hezounek

As people age, they start to complain more of pains in their muscle groups and joints. They seem to become rigid up with age, and such routine activities as bending over for the morning newspaper can make them wince.

Such pain can grip so severely that they are sure it begins deep in their bones. Although the real reason of stiffness and discomfort lies not in the joints or bones, according to examination at the Johns Hopkins Medical School, but in the muscle groups and connective tissues that move the joints.

The difficulty of inflexible joints and muscle groups is comparable to the difficulty of opening and closing a gate because of a infrequently used and rusty hinge that has become balky.

Thus, if people do not often be in motion their muscle groups and joints through their full ranges of motion, they lose certain of their potential. That is why when these people will attempt to shift a joint after a long time of immobility, they feel pain, and that discourages further use

Let’s say you have osteoarthritis - perhaps the most common disorder of muscular system. It is often treated with a surgical procedure to clean out debris in the joint, using a tiny scope inserted straight into the knee. However more and more researches point out fact that the surgery works, but no better than other treatments. Dr. Kalousek is a rheumatologist from Spa-resorts.cz points out - surgery doesn't stop the arthritic process.

Interestingly American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) encourages patients to think about physical therapy as an alternative non-surgical option for osteoarthritis treatment.

Doctor Kalousek confidences that beside healing therapy & rehabilitation everyone can protect own joints from osteoarthritis or slow its progression simply by following recommendations:

-Reduce weight. Just remember that every pound lost reduces the load exerted on the knee for each step by 4 kilogram. So turn into a healthy eater!

Being a healthy eater needs you to become both educated and clever about what healthy eating actually is. Being food clever isn't about learning to compute grams or extra fat, or is it about learning labels and counting energy.

Healthy eating is entirely about balanced and moderate eating, consisting of healthy foods no less than three times every day. Healthy eaters eat a lot of various kinds of foods, not limiting themselves to one definite food sort or food group.

-Be active. Training strengthens the muscles around joints, which can prevent cartilage from wearing down.

-Stay straight. Good position protects the neck, back, hip and knee joints.

-Don't stay immobile when sitting. Switching positions can decrease joint and muscle stiffness.

-Lift cautiously. Use your biggest and strongest joints and muscles when lifting or carrying to avoid straining smaller joints.

-Break it up. Rest between periods of heavy activity to prevent repetitive stress on joints that can accelerate wear and tear.

In other words non-surgical therapy is a good option of surgical operation in many cases!
