The 1990’s saw a dramatic increase in international capital mobility. underlying trends in capital flows shows that private capital flows now dominate with a share capital reduction of official flows to a trickle.

Until the 1990’s, the main source of external funding across the developing world has been the official development assistance (ODA) granted by the governments of countries with high incomes. Such assistance aroused great interest in understanding the nature and economic effects of capital flows and appropriate policy responses to protect against financial instability While the impact of flows of “aid” has been relatively well studied and understood the impact of private capital flows remains ambiguous and controversial. For example, the type of capital inflow, direct investment or portfolio seems to make a critical difference of impact.

Foreign direct investment has shown positive effects well known through technological spillovers and stable investment-related facilities and equipment, but the investment portfolio is more closely associated with the volatility and ability to be activated by both internal and external factors , so it is very difficult to manage and control.

Moreover, the impact of private capital flows varies considerably across countries, time, level of economic development and financial and economic policies, stressing the need of country studies to allow comparisons and stylized.

Capital flows in a broad range of economic variables such as exchange rates, interest rates, foreign exchange reserves, domestic monetary and financial system.
