When refurbishing a vehicle, whether you're doing a simple repair/maintenance job, or anything else ranging from a classic repair to turning your vehicle into something modeled after Chip Foose Designs, one of the first things you should take into account is re-carpeting your floorboards. There are a number of reasons why you would like to recover the floorboards in an old car. You can see what type of condition the metal framework of the vehicle is in. It is not sufficient to simply replace the floor boards if there is some structural damage that requires mending. You don't wish this to come back and bite you at a later date. Your overall purpose is to improve both the appearance of the vehicle and the road safety and reliability of this device. If this car is new to you i.e. if you purchased it from a used auto vendor you may not have been given the complete and proper history. The best way to properly repair a classic car is from the metal up. Like the phrase goes, a task worth doing is just worth doing well. Rust is a major issue in any vehicle but older designs can be particularly susceptible. It's important no matter what kind of project you're working on, but of course, if you're looking to build a show vehicle in the spirit of Chip Foose Designs or other well known designers, then you really need to watch for corrosion and make sure that this is not an issue in the car you are repairing. You ought to examine as much of the frame as possible. This implies removing not just the carpet but the seats and kick panels as well if at all. You may not be able to remove the seat belts but you should be able to work around them. You cannot really upholster an automobile without putting in new floor board. That would be like painting a house but leaving the old floor coverings down. They may do the job but they are unlikely to improve the appearance, and even if you're not looking to do something fancy like turn your ride into something which could compete with Chip Foose Designs at car shows, it's still something you'll want to take some time to do and do correct! Changing old tatty floor boards is a relatively inexpensive way to improve your car presuming you don't find any metal damage. Should you come across that the frame is much damaged, you may want to remove that particular vehicle for parts and move onto the next model.
