Part of the fun of visiting a new country, such as Tanzania, can be listening to the local music. One of the easiest ways to do this is to listen to the radio stations while you are driving around or in your hotel room. Usually it is easier to listen to the radio in bigger cities and there also tends to be more variety in stations and types of music played on the radio stations. The leading city in Tanzanias music industry is Dar es Salaam. The unique Tanzania music began to develop with Dar es Salaam as the central location in the 1970s when foreign music was banned from national radio programs in order to promote the development of Tanzanian music culture. In Dar es Salaam many various African music influenced the creation of a rap and hip hop music culture. Thus at least in Dar es Salaam you can often experience local Tanzanian rap and hip hop music on the radio as well as in clubs and such. Most of the radio stations you will get in Tanzania feature the local language of Tanzania, which is Swahili or Kiswahili. This may make some of the stations kind of boring along with confusing to listen to for a foreigner, however, when the station mostly plays the local music in Swahili it can often still be enjoyed. However, the news and information radio station not so much. Although, there are some radio stations, such as the BBC that are in English that you can at least understand and get news from if you want to while in Tanzania. The music played by the radio stations in Tanzania does vary. One of the common types of radio stations you can tune into in Tanzania include Catholic ones that are in Swahili and feature religious talk shows and Christian music. There are also stations that play world music (i.e. music from places other than Tanzania), dance music, and folk music. There are also stations that play a variety of music including ones that mostly focus on playing local Tanzanian bands and music. You can pretty much find something for all tastes, although you might not hear much of specific genres that do not have as much of a worldwide release, such as less popular styles of music you listen to in your home country.
