Romero Britto is Passionate about Expressive, Meaningful Pop Art

By: Chelsey Townes

The name of artist Romero Britto is compared to some of the most famous pop artists of all time including the great Andy Warhol and the uniquely talented Roy Lichtenstein. Central to the heart and creativity of all of these is the visual art movement. This is clearly evident in all Romero Brito art works.

This up and coming artist was born during October , 1963 in Recife, Brazil. As one of eight children young Britto spent his formative years in fairly modest surroundings. Even as a small boy his artistic talents would not be denied and he created a colorful, vibrant environment on whatever scraps of cardboard or paper he could find.

An older sibling worked in a bookstore and when he had the chance he would bring his young brother books detailing how to draw and paint. Romero applied himself to these studies and practiced his techniques every available minute of the day. His talent and creativity began to bring him a small measure of fame in his local community and the first Romero Brito art exhibit debuted when the young artist was only 15 years old. Even with this success it did not seem likely that he would one day support his family by working as an artist.

Setting aside his passion for creative self expression Britto won a scholarship and entered law school with the idea of becoming an attorney. Soon he realized that he could not bear to be away from the art world that was his passion. By the time 1983 had arrived Romero had been traveling through Europe studying his favorite artists and developing his own artistic talents. Romero Brito art showings and exhibitions were also gaining him fans in a number of countries.

The pop-art movement was expanding by leaps and bounds during the mid 1980s. In 1987 Britto had embraced this artistic phenomenon and was happily a part of the pop-art culture in the United States. He opened a gallery in Miami, Florida where he was able to introduce Romero Brito art to an even larger fan base. Absolut Vodka granted him a commission to create a new logo for their 1989 advertising campaign and other companies soon followed. Pepsi, Disney and IBM all asked Britto to work with them; and he was even charged with creating a series of postage stamps for the Postal Administration at the United Nations.

The art of Romero Britto combines playful themes, bold colors and imaginative images to create a unique style that has made him the leading pop artist of his generation for over a decade. Romero style has not remained stagnant however; he constantly evolves as he seeks to share his art with more of the world. Romero has also managed to do with few other artist have done, crossing borders with his works that inspire and catch the attention of both seasoned art professionals and those that know little about art.

Romero Brito art works can be found in almost every type of media. This artist is not content to limit himself to any single creative process or material. He shares his artistic inspirations through sculptures, acrylics, lithographs, watercolors, pastels, oils and charcoals. His artistic endeavors have been described as vibrant, compelling and fresh. One of his specialties is to combine pop art themes with Cubism or graffiti and then use these as vehicles to convey social or political statements.

Michael Jordan is a fan of Romero Brito art. The artist is also admired by a number of private collectors, industry executives and entertainers including such famous individuals as Arnold Schwarzenegger and Dustin Hoffman. The works of this versatile and prolific artist have been featured in "The New Yorker" and "Vanity Fair" magazines. His art has also been on display at more than 100 art galleries in countries such as Europe, the United States, Asia and Brazil.

The artist is glad that he has the opportunity to help those who are far less fortunate. Romero Brito art has been donated to help raise money for charities such as the American Red Cross and the Saint Jude's Children's Hospital. The original Miami, Florida location for the Romero Brito art gallery is still open to the public. Miami is also where Romero Britto, his wife and son have their home.
