The quality of optical fiber patchcords are crucial in determining the performance of your network. Patchcords can be simplex, duplex, or multi-fiber. Each type of patchcord has different uses in different types of network environments. A simplex optic patchcord is made of fiber optic cables with only one thread of fiber optic glass inside the single core and with just one single outer jacket. Duplex fiber optic patchcords on the other hand feature two such cables. Both, simplex and duplex patchcords come with various cable structure types such as singlemode and multimode. Singlemode fiber cable Singlemode fiber cables are used for long distance data transmission (longer than 550 meters (1,800 ft)). Singlemode fiber cables are usually found in 9/125 type and 8.3/125 type. Here, 9 and 8.3 denotes the diameter of the fiberglass core, and 125 signifies the cladding diameter. Multimode fiber cable Unlike singlemode fiber cables, multimode fiber cables are best for short distance data transmission. Multimode fibers are described by their core and cladding diameters. Normally, multimode fiber optic cables have 62.5 or 50 µm fiberglass core and a cladding diameter of 125 µm. The jacket color is often used to distinguish multimode cables from singlemode cables. Singlemode fiber cables usually have a yellow color jacket whereas an orange color jacket denotes a multimode fiber cable. Singlemode Simplex Patchcords So, singlemode simplex patchcords are patchcords made of fiber optic cables with only one thread of fiber optic glass inside the single core. Singlemode simplex patchcords are based on a singlemode cable structure type and hence, can be used for long distance data transmission. Such patchcords are available with all major fiber optic connector types— LC, SC, ST, FC, MU, MTRJ, E2000. Singlemode simplex patchcords are best suited for Local Area Networks, fast Ethernet, telecommunication networks, fiber channel, ATM networks etc…
