Basic Facts About Flea Pests Fleas are one of the more important kinds of insect nuisances as they do not only cause discomfort when they bite but they can transmit several diseases. Cat fleas are seen throughout the United States and the rest of the world. Adult fleas are about 1/8". Cat fleas do not have wings, and their bodies are flattened in a lateral direction, (side to side). Their color is brown to black. Female fleas produce 4-8 eggs after each blood meal, Throughout their entire lifetime, they will lay somewhere between 400-500 eggs. Eggs are oval, whitish in color, and about 1/64" long. The babies usually emerge in 1-12 days. Flea larvae feed on natural waste but almost all have need of dried fecal blood so that they can finalize their growth. Baby larvae fleas do not bite, on the contrary they feed on blood that they locate in adult feces. Furthermore, flea larvae must have high relative humidity (45-95º:.) Adults fleas typically start to seek their first blood meal on the second day after they emerge, however they can also live for several months on stored body fat. Once fleas are on a host, they are apt to live on that host, feeding, mating, in addition to laying eggs, unless, of course, they are dislodged. Although fleas have a ideal host, they will readily bite humans and other warm blooded mamals and can survive using other species as hosts. Based on their environmental conditions fleas can survive up to a a whole year.. It is important to remember, that it is not obligatory to have pets in the home in order to have fleas present. This is since fleas will habitually fall off their original host subsequent to a big blood meal. If a flea falls off a current host as the host is outside, then the flea will rest where it fell until it finishes the meal. If a human being should stroll near the flea, after the flea has ingested the meal, the flea will hop up onto the person, making the human its new host. Fleas are able to lay dormant for extended periods of time. So if fleas have infested a dwelling and the house becomes inactive; for instance, lets say the the homeowners go on a lengthy holiday or the owner sells the habitat, then the fleas will hibernate in the place where they fell off their previous host. As soon as the last or new family returns to the dwelling, the fleas will wake up from their hibernation and spring onto their new hosts. They will actually pick up their life cycle from where it left off. For this reason, a family buying a new home cannot assume that because the house has been unoccupied for a long time that there are no fleas.
