By: Carl Fothergill

Mickey Mouse toys, cartoons and DVDs always appeared to be in demand, so let's take a brief look back at where Mickey Mouse actually came from. Steamboat Willie was one of the earliest Mickey Mouse cartoons, and we're going to take a look at it in this article.

1928 was the year it was released, featuring synchronized sound for the first time. New York was the city that Steamboat Willie premiered. It was an immediate success.

Ub Iwerks and Walt Disney directed and wrote the film, which was a parody of steamboat Bill Junior, a film with Buster Keaton. A Disney animator called Wilfred Jackson put the music together. Turkey in the Straw And Steamboat Bill proved to be some of the most popular songs.

Issues relating to the copyright of the film have proved controversial, but recent evidence suggests that Steamboat Willie may be in the public domain. The film has been so well received that the United States film Registry have selected it for preservation. It was also voted at number 13 in the list of the 50 best cartoons of all time.

The movie has been subject to censorship in the past. Swinging a cat around Mickey's head and using a goose as a set of bagpipes filed to impress the censor.

The Walt Disney treasures DVD also featured the Steamboat Willie movie. The black-and-white Mickey Mouse cartoon DVD entitled Vintage Mickey also featured the Steamboat Willie film.

That Mickey Mouse should feature in the videogame should really come as no surprise. The first level of the videogame Mickey Mania: The Timeless Adventures of Mickey Mouse was actually based on the Steamboat Willie movie. The game finally made its way onto the Sega CD and Sony PlayStation consoles, but was originally released for the Super Nintendo.

The Disney game Kingdom Hearts I I also features a Steamboat Willie inspired the world, with period versions of the characters.

I'm pretty unmarried that the film from the 1920s has created this massive market for Mickey Mouse Toys and clothes. The amount of Mickey Mouse paraphernalia online is quite amazing, as a quick search will show. You'll find dressing up sets, board games, earrings, pajamas and dozens of DVDs. There is a toy for each occasion. The up session people have with Mickey Mouse fails to diminish.

To think that Mickey Mouse is as successful as he is, 80 years after his first film, is quite astounding. A true success story!.
