Understanding MPO connectors

By: Metaplume

The MT connector, which can hold up to 12 fibers, is the pioneer of the latest range of small form factor fiber connectors. Like MTRJ connectors, MPO connectors also hail from the MT connector.

MPO connectors are very high density small form factor fiber optic connectors developed by NTT around the MT ferrule, to simplify the process of pre-termination of backbone cables.

MPO connectors are designed to hold around 4 and 12 fibers, but the latest generation of this ferrule can be used to terminate up to 72 fibers in a single MPO connector. The aim is to achieve high density interconnection and up to 12 times the density of standard connectors. MPO connectors provide reliable performance in interconnecting several fibers in a small footprint and in turn result in high cost and space savings.

The MPO ferrules are named according to the specific number of fibers they can hold in the range of 4-72 fibers; for instance, the MPO4 connector can hold up to 4 fibers and the MPO12 can situate up to 12 fibers.

MPO connectors are built around the precision molded MT ferrule and connect fibers using a bare ribbon or ruggedized PVC jacketed ribbon cable. Singlemode MPO connectors have an angled ferrule while the multimode MPO ferrule is generally flat. The multi fiber ribbon cable is flat and fibers are arranged side by side in a jacket, up to 12 fibers in a ribbon will have a cladding of 125µm, inserted into 250µm spaced parallel grooves.

MPO connectors use a push-pull latching mechanism with two precise metal guide pins to achieve the exact fiber alignment between the mating ferrules. The precise housing dimensions of MPO connectors offer easy connection and disconnection of fibers from the MPO connectors.

The small size of MPO connectors allows the easy and quick termination of fibers as the pre-terminated fiber cables are fed through the smallest holes during installation. This reduces the space required in the distribution panels and fibers can be terminated easily without undergoing any damage during the termination.

The standard insertion loss for MPO connectors is 0.25dB with a recommended loss margin of 0.5dB.

MPO connectors are generally used in high-density backplane and Printed Circuit Board (PCB) applications, in data and telecommunication networks. MPOs are also used for parallel optical interconnection between PC cards and patch panels, O/E modules and Optical Switch interframe connections. It is also a common connector type used for premise installation, Gigabit Ethernet, CATV, Active Device/Transceiver Interface and multimedia applications like videos.
