Understanding MU connectors

By: Metaplume

MU or Miniature Unit connectors, also called mini SC, are small sized SC connectors with 1.25mm ferrules. Developed by Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation, MU connectors have the smallest single ferrule. These new generation fiber connectors are suitable for dense installations due to their small form factor.

Like all connectors, MU connectors consist of a connector body, ferrule, cable and coupling device. Fiber optic cable connectors are suitable for different applications. MU connectors can be installed in a wide range of applications such as advanced optical transmission, wave division multiplexing, fiber to the home exchange, and high speed data applications.

Fiber optic connectors are available in different dimensions and have different methods of coupling, each with their own advantages and disadvantages. While MU connectors have all the features of SC connectors, they also have various advantages such as higher packing density, lower price, reduced footprint, shorter polishing time, and small ferrule endface.

Designed for both single and multimode cables, MU connectors are easy to operate, and are known for their superior performance. They also have low insertion and high return loss. The latest developments in technology have further decreased the price of MU connectors making them cost effective as well as high performance options.
