Understanding ST adapters

Understanding ST adapters.
Fiber optic adapters are used for linking two connectors and are essential for fiber

optic assemblies. There are many types of adapters such as FC, LC, SC, ST, MTRJ, MU,

MPO and hybrid adapters. ST adapters are inline and are connected to fiber optic

connectors at both ends to ensure the correct alignment of the ferrules of the

connectors.

ST adapters have a compact design, high precision alignment, low insertion and

return loss and back reflection. They are usually available in metal or plastic

housings with phosphor bronze or zirconia split sleeves. ST fiber optic adapters are

used in applications such as premise installations, medical and sensor applications,

telecom networks, test equipment, CATV, local area networks (LANs), datacomm

networks and instrumentation. ST adapters are available in both singlemode and

multimode.

Hybrid fiber optic adapters are also available with ST adapters to form combinations

such as SC-ST and FC-ST and various other combinations. They are used to link

different types of fiber optic connectors, either male-female or female to female in

nature. For example, a hybrid connection involving ST adapters can have an ST male

end and an FC female end. This means that the ST adapter in the union has a

connector plug at the end considered male and the FC adapter has a socket at the

end, considered female. They are also available in both singlemode and multimode

options.

ST adapters are therefore available in a wide variety of connector and mounting

options for various applications.
