teaching a child to ride a bike using a balance bike

By: David Bennardo

Balance bikes provide many benefits in educating your toddler to ride. Why you may ask? Simply put, a balance bike has no pedals, for that reason a toddler is required to use his / her feet to touch the ground and unlike the traditional bike, each toddler’s improvement is at their own individual pace; with the child being in total control of how far they go by using their feet to go the bike. When the youngster is secure in taking his / her feet off the ground, they are able to do so without anxiety of falling and not being capable to stop in time, as their feet are close to the ground at all times. Children seem to identify impulsively what to do on a bike, and without the issues of learning pedals, steering, brakes at once, a balance bike offers the chance to gain self-confidence in the most challenging skill of all, being able to balance. Balance bikes enable children to have fun, and more importantly, it gives them a chance to learn co-ordination, learning key motor skills as they go. As your child’s self-confidence grows on the running bike, they quickly proceed to gliding by running forward then “freewheeling” as far as possible. As they glied, they be trained how to balance naturally and the transition to a normal bike without stabilisers is quick and easy, for both parent and youngster. Balance bikes are an ideal way for your toddler to become skilled at to balance first, gain assurance in handling and controlling a bike as it moves. They learn co-ordination, motor skills and most importantly, trust in themselves. So how do you teach a toddler to ride a balance bike? Well it’s easy, alot easier and less frustrating than educating your youngster to ride a bike with pedals for the first time. Make sure your youngster has the proper clothing and a well fitted kid’s helmet. On a flat ground, with absolutely no hills or slopes, allow your child to sit on the bike with both feet touching the ground. At his own pace, he / she will experiment with using his feet to go the bike as fast or as slow as they feel convinced with. Don’t push your child, allow them to get used to the bike at their pace. In their own time, your toddler will eventually glide on the bike. This is an significant step as it’s this phase that reinforces the lesson in balance or if they need more time. Your toddler will indicate when he / she is ready to ride a bike with pedals. Once your toddler has his/her own pedal bike and he/she is seated in the saddle of the bike, take hold of the handle bars and ensure it is secure before asking your child to place his feet on the pedals. You will need to clarify that he/she needs to push down on each pedal to be able to move. Keep hold of the bike as he / she begins to pedal and move with your youngster until he / she feels sure to go it alone. Learning to ride a bike is one of life’s greatest little joys, and challenges for children.
